Software/App Review
I can say from personal experience that SmartyAnts is a fantastic app. They use it all through out FWISD. My daughter has been using it the whole time she has been in school. I think it is so important to have things like this for the more tech savvy kids of today. She has always been obsessed with apps on my iPhone and her iPad. She sees this as a gaming app. I think it wncourages her to use it more often. I don't think she would be opposed to the learning that goes hand in hand, but I think she is oblivious to it. She has learned a lot and never gets bored with it. If there is any correlation to her reading abilities, I would not be suprised. She is currently in the 2nd grade and reading at a 4th grade level.
Media Literacy Lesson
Lesson Plan
After Watching Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED talk speech The Danger of a Single Story, at home the night before, eighth grade students in groups of 3 will research and select the most common and easily found stories about a particular group. They will discuss he information found. They will relate their findings to the speech and present to class in form of a power point.
The skills used for this assignment are “Empowered Learner”, “Creative Communicator,” as well as “Global Collaborator” (ISTE.ORG). They are learning about diversity in this exercise. They are using technology to access about groups they may not be completely familiar with. They are also putting together the information through technology in a creative and thought provoking way. The students will also learn how to find verifiable information on the Internet. They will be learning how to check the information to see if it is reliable or biased.
I think this is a good assignment to open student’s eyes to the realities of an “online news source.” It is to often that even grown adults have a hard time fact checking the things they read online. I think people have a bad habit of only looking at one news source that tells them what they want to hear. I think it is important for students to gain the ability to research info, and for that matter do the research before making opinions.

Progress Monitor: Module 4 Accommodations
Some of the accommodations I could include on this lesson plan are already in place since I am using a video on YouTube. One that is offered is closed captioning for those that are hearing impaired. The other accommodation available on YouTube is subtitles are offered in other languages for ELL students. The part of the assignment that requires students to do research on their own I could suggest students use the program jaws when they are searching for articles online.
